Aberlour children reach the skies with a day flying

Aberlour children take to the skies

09/07/2010

Young people from Aberlour were taken on fights in small aircraft from Cumbernauld Aerodrome as part of an aviation fun day on Saturday, 24th July 2010. The day was hosted by Aviation Without Borders and The Leading Edge Flying Club and the event was funded by the European Aeronautic, Defence and Space (EADS) Company.  Activities included a talk on aviation from a pilot, a tour of the hanger, lunch and a flight for the children and their families.  Many of these children never thought they would get a chance to visit an aerodrome never mind fly in a small aircraft and the experience broadens minds and expands horizons.

Aberlour Child Care Trust is the largest, solely Scottish, children’s charity providing a range of services, support and advice to over 6,000 of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, young people and families in Scotland.

Aviation Without Borders provides humanitarian assistance through aviation services.  AWB is involved in four main activities: Smiling Wings Days – aviation discovery fun days in the UK for children with disadvantages; air cargo shipments of medical and other humanitarian supplies; escorting sick children by air to and from the UK for treatment and a plan to operate a small fleet of light aircraft for humanitarian missions in Africa.

Leading Edge operates from Cumbernauld Airport and brings a friendly and professional approach to flying.  The group consists of two divisions; Leading Edge Flight Training for the flying school and the Leading Edge Flying Club for a friendly base for pilots in Central Scotland.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. Eurocopter and Airbus, which builds the giant A380 airliner, form part of the group.
