One of Scotland’s most famous folk partnerships will perform at a historic fundraising concert for Aberlour.
Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham will play as part of the bicentenary celebrations in the village of Aberlour on September 14.
The Speyside village is celebrating its 200th anniversary throughout 2012, culminating in a weekend of parties, events and reunions.
The concert will raise money for Aberlour Child Care Trust – the largest children’s charity operating solely in Scotland - which originated in the village.
Senior fundraising executive Marie-Claire Jones said: “We are very proud of our strong roots in Aberlour and so we are thrilled to be part of such a historic occasion this year.
“We hope that by bringing Aly and Phil to Aberlour, we can have some fun and enjoy some of the best traditional music Scotland has to offer.
“We are sure that the boys will make this a night to remember at a time when the village and charity are celebrating its shared history and culture.”
The concert will be held in a marquee in Alice Littler Park, with tickets priced £18.
In 1875, Aberlour Orphanage first opened its doors to provide a home for four ‘mitherlessbairns’ in the village. Over the years it grew to care for 500 children, who came from all over Scotland to live there.
It flourished under the leadership of Canon Charles Jupp, affectionately known as the ‘Beggar of the North’ for his tireless fundraising efforts, work which was continued after he died by Reverend C A, known as ‘Wolfie’.
From the 1960s the orphanage evolved to become a series of houses across Scotland, to allow children to live in a homely environment, closer to relatives.
In 1978 a new constitution was drawn up and Aberlour Child Care Trust as we know it today was born.
Every year the charity reaches 6,000 children, young people and families, helping them to overcome obstacles including disability, family breakdown and parental drug and alcohol use.
It has services all across the country, from Elgin in the north to Stranraer in the Borders.
Sandy Henderson, chairmain of Aberlour Community Association, said: “I am delighted that one of Scotland's top acts is coming to Aberlour on this very memorable day.”
