Children living with parental substance use

This is the report of the debate of the Think Tank brought together by Aberlour, in partnership with the Drug Action Team Association, to examine and debate responses to children affected by parental drug and alcohol use. The Think Tank report is a unique contribution to the national “Hidden Harm” debate because it is drawn from the knowledge and experience of commissioners, managers, practitioners and researchers from health, education, social work, criminal justice and drug and alcohol working on both the statutory and voluntary sectors.

The Think Tank discussed the characteristics of substance use, its effects on the parent and the impact on the child. They paid particular attention to the impact of children in different age groups. Against that background they specifically addressed the question: What are the circumstances that should require the removal of children from home?” The report sets out a proposed set of principles and key indicators designed to help professionals make that difficult decision. Finally, it identifies implications for policy and practice development
