Why do so many children run away from home?

runaway children scotland   “My mum kept hurting my sister and my sister never wanted that to happen to me so we ran away together.”

Today, 25 Scottish children – some younger than 10 – will run away. Some will leave because they simply feel unloved and unwanted. Others will be fleeing from the worst situations imaginable. For them, anywhere seems better than home.

Your gift of £25 could help publicise our vital support services in Scotland’s schools so our children know where to turn for help before they feel the need to run away.

What happens to children who run away?

scottish runaways   “I could have been raped, I could have been murdered.”

A quarter of all children who run away end up sleeping rough.  They are frighteningly easy prey for those who make their living or take pleasure from exploiting children. These dangerous individuals can seem kind at first. But in exchange for their ‘help’, they may force children to steal for them, deal drugs or even sell their bodies.

Your gift of £25 could help provide a safe refuge where a child can receive help away from the dangers of the street.

What becomes of children who repeatedly run away?

runaway children scotland   “I definitely wouldn’t be in this mess. No money, no job, no life. I’ve got a proper lack of confidence as well and that’s a major problem.”

Children with violent and abusive families can end up sleeping rough time and time again. As childhood gives way to adulthood and they no longer have a home to run from, some end up living and dying on the Scotland’s cold streets where the average life expectancy is just 44.£25 could help to cover the cost of providing a child with the 24 hour care and support they need to turn their lives around and stay off the street for good.

Protection and counselling under one roof

As 9000 unhappy Scottish children discover each year, running away is not fun or romantic. Nor is it an adventure like in the movies. It’s frightening, it’s lonely and it’s extremely dangerous.  That’s the grim reality – and the reason why Aberlour is building Scotland’s first refuge for children.

Aberlour’s new refuge is being designed to compliment our groundbreaking Running – Other Choices (ROC) project which was launched last year to tackle the problem of running away.

When it opens, children will at last have a place to stay away from harm. What’s more, our specially trained staff will work hard with them and their families to ensure a permanent solution to their problems is found – one that ensures they never feel the need to run away from home again.
