Scotland’s leading children’s charity is urging volunteers to tackle Africa’s highest mountain – in a kilt! Aberlour, the largest, solely Scottish children’s charity, is to benefit from Kilti-manjaro, an expedition seeking to get 100 people to climb Kilimanjaro, all wearing our national dress.
The climb is being planned by two longer term supporters in aid of Aberlour and is scheduled for September 23rd – October 3rd next year (2010). Each participant will pay £2200 for the trip, of which £100 will go to Aberlour. If they wish to fundraise further, they can – although they have the option, of course, to donate to other charities.
Anyone worried about safety can rest assured – the climb will be managed by 360 Expeditions, regarded as world-class in organising such ventures. The trek will be led by Raj, who took a group of TV celebs up Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief.
Also anyone equally worried about the cold, and perhaps being nipped about the foothills, can rest easy. It’s not necessary to be a true Scotsman, if you get the drift – but kilts are mandatory!
One of the trip’s organisers is long-time Aberlour supporter and fundraiser, Bill Cook. He said: ‘It's not that difficult. Bash (John Henderson) and I have been up top twice before. ‘It's an experience that you will never ever forget. So come with us and enjoy the sight of 100 kilts and the glaciers on top of Africa's highest mountain.
