ABERLOUR’S FAMILY CENTRE SUPPORTS BLUEBELL DAY
Aberlour’s Langlees Family Centre, based in Falkirk, is supporting Bluebell day - the UK’s first official post-natal depression awareness raising day. Staff will be buying a bluebell to recognise the 10,000 women who are affected by this condition after the birth of their baby.
Susan Stewart, Service Manager, Langlees Family Centre said:
“We offer a number of tailored services for parents with, or expecting a baby, and we are based in the centre of the community with easy access for local families. We understand that having a child can be overwhelming and make some women feel that they can’t cope. We offer practical support, opportunities to meet other mums and we are always there as someone to talk to who will listen without judging.”
Langlees Family Centre offer a package of services for families before and after the birth of a new baby. This is called Bumps 'n' Babies and includes a drop in service to offer continuous support to women, their partners and babies. The service also includes weekly art therapy sessions, either one-to-one or in a small group. Art therapy allows mums to use materials such as clay, paint, pastels and collage to express thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences that are difficult to put into words. Bumps 'n' babies also includes infant massage to help strengthen the bond between mother and child - this is particularly recognised to help those mothers suffering from post-natal depression. Langlees also offer this service for young people (13 - 19) facing the prospect of parenthood during their teenage years. This is offered in the community on an individual basis.
Addie Stevenson, Aberlour’s Chief Executive, is pleased the family centre is recognising and supporting Bluebell Day.
“It is important to raise awareness of post-natal depression as it affects so many women during those crucial months when a baby is totally dependent on its mother for love, comfort and sustenance. We recognise the needs of parents and offer practical services in the community for parents as well as providing a national voice and training resource through National Parenting Project, supported by the Scottish Executive. “
