Number one provides residential rehabilitation to women with problematic drug and/or alcohol use and their children. The service works with both parent and child to reduce the adverse  impact of parental substance use, improve parenting and relationships and strengthen resilience. The service also works with pregnant women with drug and/or alcohol problems and women who are making attempts to become reconciled with their children but have a substance use issue.

Service aims and what we offer

Number one aims to reduce the adverse impact of problematic substance use and deprivation experienced by children, young people and their families.

The service offers a variety of working methods including:

• reducing risk and promoting a safe environment for children to grow and develop,
• supporting women to achieve and maintain positive change in relation to dependency, parenting and other life skills,
• helping women to understand and minimise the impact of their substance use on their children,
• helping families to develop support networks,
• supporting women to develop confidence and skills to move towards training, work and other pro-social activities.

Who we work with

Number one works with up to six families at any one time, addressing the needs of both women and children.

Children up to the age of 12 can stay in accommodation with their mothers, which is an approach unique to Aberlour and offers a greater chance of success.

General service information

Number one mainly works with families in the Glasgow City Council area, although referrals can also be made from other Local Authorities.

Each family has their own bedroom with other areas of the service designed for communal use.

Outcomes

This service contributes to the following Scottish Government’s National Outcomes.

• Our young people are successful learners, confident individuals, effective communicators and responsible citizens
• Our children have the best start in life and are ready to succeed
• Our children live longer, healthier lives
• The life chances for children, young people and families at risk have improved.

By ensuring these outcomes are at the core of our work, Number one is able to provide a service that directly impacts Scotland’s children, young people and families in a positive way.

Partnership and funding

For families located within the Glasgow City Council area, placements are funded through a partnership with Glasgow Addiction Service.

If a family is a resident outwith the Glasgow area, funding must be made available from their Local Authority.

Vicki came to Number One with a drug problem and a bleak past.  Her mother died when she was 3, her father was dependent on alcohol throughout her childhood and she had experienced domestic abuse.  She was funding her drug use through prostitution, had a range of health problems and was struggling with her 4 year old son.

Number One supported Vicki with her drug use and multiple health issues.  The staff also worked with her son on the issues he was displaying and to re-build the bond between them.  Vicki's past traumas, mental state and prostitution problems were also addressed and challenged.

David is now an active healthy boy who now has a positive relationship with his mum.  Vicki is also drug free and in good physical health.  She now works as an administrator through the further training she accessed whilst at Number One.
