Have We Got Our Priotrities Right?

Full Review (1.7MB Acrobat PDF)

Cover of Aberlour Annual Review 2005

This is the report of the debate of the Think Tank brought together by Aberlour, in partnership with the Drug Action Team Association, to examine and debate responses to children affected by parental drug and alcohol use. The Think Tank report is a unique contribution to the national “Hidden Harm” debate because it is drawn from the knowledge and experience of commissioners, managers, practitioners and researchers from health, education, social work, criminal justice and drug and alcohol working on both the statutory and voluntary sectors.

The Think Tank discussed the characteristics of substance use, its effects on the parent and the impact on the child. They paid particular attention to the impact of children in different age groups. Against that background they specifically addressed the question: What are the circumstances that should require the removal of children from home?” The report sets out a proposed set of principles and key indicators designed to help professionals make that difficult decision. Finally, it identifies implications for policy and practice development

A Matter of Substance ?

Full Review (1.4MB Acrobat PDF)

Cover of Aberlour Annual Review 2005

This is the second Think Tank report published by Aberlour in partnership with Scottish Association of Alcohol and Drug Action Teams (SAADAT).
The report raises awareness of the estimated 100,000 Scottish children affected by parental alcohol use and explores the differences between problem parental alcohol use and drug use and the impact on children.

The report challenges politicians, policy makers, and health and social care services to recognise that more tolerant attitudes to drinking can have a harmful effect on the children of problem drinkers, as it can lead to delays in identifying the problems of the parent and even more serious delays in recognising the impact on children.

The Healthy Fathering Report

The Healthy Fathering Report 1.4Mb PDF

Fathering ReportThis report provides an overview of the work of a small, time limited project with one key message – that fathers matter to children and need acknowledgement and support in undertaking their fathering role.

Through a mix of direct work with fathers, promotional events and training for professionals the project contributed to the growth in the understanding of the value of father involvement and modelled some approaches to engaging with the men as parents.

While there are men a number of organisations promoting the interests of fathers, men continue to be in the minority as users of family support services and much remains to be done. The project may have been short lived, but the key message and learning reflected in this report are still relevant.

We hope you find it an interesting and informative read.
