Purpose and Aims of the role

Would you like to support our staff in promoting storytelling and reading to parents and children at our Family Outreach Service in D&G? Could you spare 2 hours a month?  Our service would like to recruit Bookbug Volunteers who will introduce stories/songs to help foster a love of books to Parents and their babies and children.

what will i be doing?

  • Facilitating Bookbug sessions
    • Encouraging Parents to read stories and sing nursery rhymes and songs to their children
    • Reading a book to a child
    • Helping staff with reading lists
    • Supporting families to read together

    what skills can i bring to this role?

    • Good communication and listening skills
    • Ability to encourage and motivate parents to participate in activities
    • Experience of working with adults from diverse backgrounds

    what qualities do i need?

    • Friendly nature
    • An enjoyment of reading
    • Be enthusiastic, flexible and committed
    • Friendly, helpful and understanding
    • Reliability

    when will i be needed?

    • 2 hours per month

Location

Dumfries, Annan, Lochmaben, Castle Douglas.

what support will i be given?

  • Induction
  • Child and Adult protection training
  • Expenses – all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed
  • Supervision and support from your manager / coordinator
  • Bookbug training

Additional Information

For all roles involving regulated work with children and/or protected adults, Aberlour will require the applicant to submit a PVG Scheme Record or a PVG Scheme Record Update application.  This opportunity is subject to the completion of satisfactory references and successful registration on the PVG Scheme.
