Family Play Buddy – Aberdeen

Purpose and Aims of the role

Would you like to help families engage with play activities to build their skills and confidence?  We run family fun days during the school holidays, fun with food and groups for under 5’s during the school terms. We would like volunteers with an interest in music, arts, crafts or health and wellbeing to help improve outcomes for children and their families.

Aberlour Family Service – Aberdeen provides a service to assess and support parents with a learning difficulty, who have children aged 0 – 12 years.

 

What will I be doing?

  • Making a difference in a child or young person’s life and that of their families
  • Assisting families with activities that can vary from cooking, music, storytelling and dance
  • Promote and encourage children and families to take part in play opportunities within their local community
  • Supporting families to experience new activities
  • Support staff to plan, prepare and run the groups
  • Helping children and their families to have fun
  • Building young children’s confidence and self esteem
  • Supporting staff at outings
  • Welcoming families into the group and making them feel comfortable
  • Being a positive role model

 

What skills can I bring to this role?

  • A specific skill within a variety of activities for example in arts, music, sport or play activities
  • Experience of working with children
  • A knowledge of issues affecting children and their families
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Experience with building confidence and self esteem
  • Ability to engage families in play
  • A genuine interest in the well-being of children and young people
  • A few hours to spare each week

What qualities do I need?

  • Ability to encourage and motivate families to participate in play activities.
  • To have a non-judgmental approach to people, have empathy
  • Be enthusiastic, flexible and committed
  • Reliable and approachable
  • Friendly, helpful and understanding
  • Reliability and a commitment to treat all information in a confidential manner
  • To have a good value base, be open minded and level headed

 

When will I be needed?

  • 2-4 hours per week during the day
  • Attend regular group activities and attend all Aberlour training
  • A minimum of 1 year’s commitment is required for this role. This is essential due to the need to develop and build trusting relationships with vulnerable children and families.LocationYou will be volunteering within Aberlour Family Service in Aberdeen, 8 Sunnybank Road, AB24 3NG and within the local community.

Due to Health and Safety requirements you must be at least 18 years of age to undertake this volunteering role.

For all roles involving regulated work with children and/or protected adults, Aberlour will require the applicant to submit a PVG Scheme Record or a PVG Scheme Record Update application. This opportunity is subject to the completion of satisfactory references and successful registration on the PVG Scheme.
