Homework Buddy – Family Outreach Dumfries and Galloway

Purpose and Aims of the role

 

Aberlour Family’s Outreach Service in Dumfries & Galloway is looking for inspirational individuals to help young people with their studies at local homework clubs based in Annandale & Eskdale, Nithsdale, & Stewartry. In addition to homework  children participate in a weekly activities to enhance peer interaction, life skills & resilience, examples are stranger danger, fire safety, arts & crafts, Forest School, foods of the world etc. The role will include possibly transporting young people from the school to the homework club venue (if you have access to transport) welcoming young people to the sessions, making sure that they feel at ease, and giving feedback to the young people’s parents about their progress.

Aberlour Family Outreach Dumfries & Galloway is a family support service based in the North West Resource Centre Dumfries working on an outreach provision in Annandale & Eskdale & the Stewartry.  Our aim is to support the lives of vulnerable children and families in order to improve their life chances by increasing resilience through the promotion of their health, educational attainment and social well-being.

 

What will I be doing? 

 

  • Supporting children at homework clubs within a school/community setting
  • Supporting children (either group or individually) with homework study
  • Team working
  • Record keeping
  • Liaising with professionals and families
  • Welcoming children as they arrive and make them feel at ease
  • Motivate and encourage children to access relevant resources within the group to complete their homework
  • Providing feedback to the children’s parents/carers about their progress
  • Assist in planning and delivery of creative activity session.

When will I be needed? 

 

  • After school hours
  • Weekday afternoons, each session lasts for approx. 2 hours
  • Group work sessions may vary according to school term times
  • Minimum commitment of 6 months required

 

Location 

 

Dumfries, Annan, Lochmaben, Castle Douglas.

Additional Information 

 

Due to Health and Safety requirements you must be at least 18 years of age to undertake this volunteering role.

For all roles involving regulated work with children and/or protected adults, Aberlour will require the applicant to submit a PVG Scheme Record or a PVG Scheme Record Update application.  This opportunity is subject to the completion of satisfactory references and successful registration on the PVG Scheme.
