Volunteer Teacher – Family Outreach Dumfries and Galloway

Purpose and Aims of the role

 

Would you like to help children with their homework and build their skills and confidence?  Could you spare an afternoon a week?  If the answer is yes, we are looking for volunteers with a teaching qualification to help improve the educational outcomes and the health and social wellbeing of children aged 5-11 years. Aberlour Family Outreach D&G is a family support service based in the North West Resource Centre Dumfries working on an outreach provision in Annandale & Eskdale & the Stewartry. We work with vulnerable children and families affected by adversities including homelessness, domestic abuse, parental substance use, parental physical ill health and parental mental ill health.

 

What will I be doing?

  • Assisting children with homework
  • Helping children with their emotional and physical wellbeing
  • Helping to assess children’s learning styles and needs
  • Supporting staff in home school link

What skills can I bring to this role?

 

  • A teaching qualification, experience working with children
  • A working knowledge of C4E and to help staff with home school link
  • Ability to work well with children
  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Ability to encourage and motivate children to participate in activities

What qualities do I need?

  • To have a non-judgemental approach to people, have empathy
  • Be enthusiastic, flexible and committed
  • Reliable and approachable
  • Friendly, helpful and understanding
  • Reliability and a commitment to treat all information in a confidential manner.

When will I be needed?

  • After school
  • An afternoon a week
  • Weekly
  • Minimum commitment of 6 months required.

Location

Dumfries, Annan, Lochmaben, Castle Douglas.

What support will I be given?

  • Induction and child protection training
  • Role specific training
  • Expenses – all out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed
  • Supervision and support from your manager / coordinator

 

Additional Information

Due to Health and Safety requirements you must be at least 18 years of age to undertake this volunteering role.

For all roles involving regulated work with children and/or protected adults, Aberlour will require the applicant to submit a PVG Scheme Record or a PVG Scheme Record Update application.  This opportunity is subject to the completion of satisfactory references and successful registration on the PVG Scheme.
