Exciting new plans for housing in Calton in Glasgow’s east end have been unveiled by Alex Neil MSP, Minister for Housing and Communities.
The ambitious £10 million development from Thenew Housing Association reflects its strong commitment to building homes in the communities it serves.
The occasion was marked with a turf cutting ceremony carried out by Mr Neil which got construction under way.
The site at London Road and Green Street will be developed to provide homes within a five/six storey building with car parking and access through a rear courtyard in Green Street.
Constructed next to a tenement, the new building will also house the Aberlour Child Care Trust - the Scottish children's charity. The ground floor will provide offices for the charity as well as 12 flats for families.
Charlie Turner, Chief Executive of Thenew Housing Association said: “The new homes for Calton confirm our promise to build much needed houses for the people we serve. This impressive new building will transform an area of Calton delivering great housing and at the same time providing a new home for Thenew.”
Marie Hayes, Aberlour's Area Manager said, “We are delighted to see construction begin on accommodation and office space for Aberlour that will allow us to support vulnerable and disadvantaged families. We have a good reputation of being a good neighbour in other parts of Glasgow and we are keen to maintain this in Calton. Our service will help mums to address substance use issues while developing their parenting skills and improving their children's health and welfare.”
A further 20 flats will be included in addition to office accommodation for Thenew.
A community space will be created which it is hoped will provide a much needed resource for the local community in Calton.
Further housing will be built by the Association in the area of the site accessed from Green Street. These will be a mixture of two, three, four and five bedroom properties and a single bungalow suitable for a wheelchair user.
The first phase will see the development being constructed on London Road. Grant funding has been provided by the Scottish Government via Glasgow City Council with private funding from the European Investment Bank through the Housing Finance Corporation and Royal Bank of Scotland.
