Youthpoint Glasgow works with young people between the ages of 12 and 19 in the South West of Glasgow where there can be high levels of social deprivation, crime, drug and alcohol dependency and recognised violent gang culture.

Youthpoint provides streetwork, diversionary activities and thematic groupwork (particularly focusing on violence-related issues). The service is also a  partner in a joint supported employment initiative working with a group of gang members.

Service aim and what we offer

The service aims to help young people access information, advice and support with any issues of concern to them and to support young people to put their views forward individually or collectively regarding their rights and promote citizenship.

The project offers a range of services including:

• an information service,
• detached streetwork,
• programme based activities,
• volunteer training,
• harm reduction,
• conflict resolution in gang culture.

Outcomes

This service contributes to the following Scottish Government’s National Outcomes.

• Our young people are successful learners, confident individuals, effective communicators and responsible citizens.
• Our children have the best start in life and are ready to succeed.
• Our children live longer, healthier lives
• The life chances for children, young people and families at risk have improved.
• Our children live safe from crime, disorder and danger.

Who we work with

The service works predominantly with young people who are often described as ‘hard to reach’. Often they have been excluded from mainstream youth facilities or see no relevance in them. Youthpoint also specifically targets groups such as young carers, disabled young people and refugee and asylum seekers.

Partnership

Youthpoint Glasgow works in partnership with Strathclyde Police, Glasgow Community Safety Services (GCSS), Culture & Sport Glasgow (C&S), Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, SWAMP and others.

Youthpoint Glasgow is funded by the Big Lottery Fund.

Jackie Killeen, Acting Scotland Director, Big Lottery Fund said:

“BIG are proud to have been able to invest in Aberlour’s Youthpoint Glasgow project, their street work service for young people.  As part of our Investing in Communities portfolio, this project is now addressing some of the key challenges these individuals face as they make a successful transition to adulthood.”
