Schools across Scotland are now serving up free school meals to every Primary 1-3 pupil, following the Scottish Government’s expanded free schools meals policy coming into effect today.
Aberlour’s Chief Executive, SallyAnn Kelly said:
“Any public policy initiative that focuses on the nutritional wellbeing of ourchildren is to be welcomed. The success of the pilot coupled with the extensive research that exists make the roll out of free school meals to our younger children an important step forward in efforts to improve the lives and learning potential of Scotland’s children. We must not imagine, however, that free school meals will represent a ‘silver bullet’ in addressing child poverty or tackling childhood obesity. These are challenges that will require concerted political attention across many areas beyond the school cafeteria.”
