In partnership with VSA and Aberdeen City Council, we help families on the ‘edge of care’ to stay together, by giving them the help and support they need to prevent a child from being taken into care.
Aberlour Family Service – Aberdeen ‘Insight’ service helps families who are struggling. The families we work with need help for a range of reasons. Our workers spend time with children, young people and their parent/s in order to understand what the family needs to thrive. We understand that family life can be difficult for all sorts of reasons. Our approach is always sympathetic and non-judgemental.
How we help
Our ‘Insight’ service has been appointed to provide an independent, evidence-based assessment service to help in the decision-making process for children who are, considered to be, on the edge of care. Our service provides community-based specialist parenting capacity assessments and interventions to help parents learn the skills they need to safely parent their children at home. We work closely with families to help them show whether they are able to consistently meet the needs of their children. We look at all elements of the child’s safety and well-being from physical to emotional, social to educational.
Our service is flexible. We give support out-with usual office hours. Because we understand the challenges our families face. We also recognise they need support at all times of the day and realise that crises can occur at any time. As a result, we ensure that our team spend time in family homes and community settings.
Reasons that families might need our help include:
- Parental substance misuse
- Domestic abuse
- Parental mental health
- Parent having a learning difficulty/disability
- Impact of parents’ adverse childhood experiences
- A combination of these factors
All referrals for our service come through Aberdeen City Council. If you are a professional who would like to make a referral, contact us.
