what will i be doing?
Can you offer compassion and a listening ear to a child or young person who is struggling at school and feels isolated and alone? Are you willing to give some of your time to help one of our children or young people living in Renfrewshire unlock their talents and look forward to the future? If so then this opportunity is perfect for you!
There are 426 Looked After children aged 8-18 living in Renfrewshire, and 100 Young Carers. Isolation and loneliness can have a huge impact on them – it gets in the way of how they learn, their self-esteem, and their aspirations for the future. Renfrewshire Council have partnered up with Aberlour to provide a mentoring service to offer 1:1 support to our children and young people.
the impact you can make
As a volunteer mentor you would be matched with one of our Renfrewshire children or young people to give them that one person who they can talk to and trust. You would find out what things they enjoy doing and help unlock their talents. This might be music, art, design, sports, and so much more. As a mentor you will then introduce your mentee to new experiences and help to reduce some of the isolation they have been experiencing. If you are over 18 then you can apply to be a mentor, there is no upper age limit.
the benefits for you
Mentoring can offer you and Renfrewshire children life changing benefits, including a step to a new career, a stronger sense of self-esteem, well-being, fulfilment, and accomplishment.
As a volunteer you would meet with a child or young person each week – the days and times can be flexible to suit your availability.
“Meeting my mentor has been helpful and has helped me get on better at school” (Young Person)
“I would suggest that anyone can do it if you are positive and have a passion to help – that’s the main thing that you need.” (Mentor)
