Charity Walk for Peace – A benefiting Response to Extremists by Muslims

13 Sept 2017

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community whose motto is “Love for all, hatred for none” has been promoting the true teachings of Islam by organising many peace events and charity walks to raise funds for the needy, poor, sick and vulnerable members of society.  This has been a  powerful counter-narrative to extremists that are often in the headlines, as it diffuses the myth that Islam and the West are not compatible.

Against this backdrop, the Scottish Ahmadiyya Muslim Elders Association is giving another befitting response to extremism by initiating the Charity Walk for Peace in Scotland, which will raise money to support those in need in Scotland.

A special event was held at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community centre in Glasgow’s West End to launch the walk. In attendance was the Lord Provost of Glasgow City Eva Bolander together with her colleague Councillor Elspeth Kerr and the ten Scottish Charities supported by Charity Walk For Peace this year, which include Aberlour Children’s Charity, Poppy Scotland, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, Beatson Cancer Charity, Barnardos,  Humanity First, Emmaus Glasgow, Archie Foundation Charity and Ronald McDonald House.

Launching the event, Glasgow’s Lord Provost Eva Bolander said: “It was a pleasure to join the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community today and help promote their Charity Walk For Peace. I urge everyone to go along and support this event that is helping a range of charities, as well as to show we value their tolerance and believes in love not hate.”

The Chairman for the Scottish Charity Walk For Peace Ahmed Owusu-Konadu said: “It is a great honour to have the Glasgow Lord Provost and all the ten Charities we are supporting this year to join us launch the Scottish Charity Walk For Peace 2017, which will take place on Saturday 23rd September at the Kelvingrove Park. This is all Islam is about, that it teaches one to always go out of your way to serve the community especially the needy, sick and the vulnerable. Also it is our way of defeating the extremists who always hijack our beautiful religion of Islam. The event is organised for the whole public and everyone young and old could register on www.charitywalkforpeace.org to have fun on the day, raise funds for our Scottish charities and also show extremists Red Card.”

The charity walk will take place on Saturday 23rd September at 9 am at Kelvingrove Park.  If you’d like to walk with an Aberlour t-shirt on, please contact fundraising@aberlour.org.uk.
