The situation

Murray and his partner Louise contacted FACCS during a particularly stressful time for their family. Living in a one-bedroom flat with a newborn baby and a 3-year-old, they were experiencing both financial strain and increasing conflict at home.

Louise felt overwhelmed by arguments with the children, especially during mornings and bedtime, and was unsure how to establish routines that worked. At the same time, Murray was worried about £1,000 in rent arrears, confusion around a council tax bill, and limited access to essential resources, all of which were adding significant pressure to the household.

Key pressures the family were facing

Living in a one-bedroom flat with a newborn and a 3-year-old
Arguments during mornings and bedtime routines
£1,000 in rent arrears
Confusion around a council tax bill
Limited access to essential resources
Difficulty establishing consistent household routines

The support provided

Support was tailored to their individual needs but delivered in a coordinated way, addressing both the family dynamics and the financial pressures at the same time.

Parenting support for Louise

Louise received telephone-based parenting support exploring child development, consistent routines and practical strategies such as task-setting and using familiar household objects as visual prompts. She was supported to move away from punishments toward low-cost, meaningful incentives such as trips to the park and time with the family dog.

Immediate practical help

The family received foodbank access, a £50 voucher for dietary needs, and referrals to a baby bank and a community fridge to address immediate pressures on the household.

Financial and debt support

A Welfare Rights referral was made and a £400 crisis loan extension secured. Joint work with Citizens Advice Bureau addressed communication barriers, and engagement with housing services began. A referral to Aberlour's Financial Wellbeing Team resulted in a £1,549.38 grant that cleared the family's rent arrears in full.

What changed

Over time, the family experienced significant improvements across all areas of their life together.
