The Implementation of “Attain” mentoring scheme, Renfrewshire

18 Apr 2022

The Attain mentoring scheme, developed by Aberlour and Renfrewshire Council, aims to support care experienced young people and those on the edge of care in improving their educational engagement and attainment. The scheme focuses on building positive, supportive relationships between mentors and mentees to enhance self-esteem, confidence, and educational outcomes.

The evaluation used a qualitative approach, including interviews with mentors, mentees, and stakeholders, as well as a focus group with delivery staff. Data was analysed using Thematic Analysis and mapped against the Re-Aim implementation model to assess the scheme’s reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, and maintenance.

Findings

  • Involvement Group: Young people with care experience highlighted the need for flexible, well-matched mentoring relationships with clear boundaries.
  • Referrals and Volunteer Recruitment: 78 young people referred and 63 volunteers were engaged, exceeding its annual target. Most referrals came from social workers, teachers, and health professionals.
  • Volunteer Training and Supervision: Mentors reported high levels of confidence and skills post-training. Ongoing support from the Attain team was highly valued.
  • Perceptions of Need: Mentors and stakeholders emphasised the importance of the scheme in addressing the unique challenges faced by care experienced young people, such as trauma, stigma, and educational disruption.
  • Impact on Mentees: Mentoring improved young people’s social skills, emotional wellbeing, and school engagement. The relationship with mentors provided a safe space for young people to express themselves and build confidence.
  • Mentoring Through COVID-19: The pandemic required adaptations, such as virtual meetings and online activities, which had mixed success. Some young people preferred face-to-face interactions.

The Attain scheme was successfully implemented, with strong training, support, and matching processes. The programme was well-received by mentors, mentees, and stakeholders, demonstrating positive impacts on young people’s educational and social outcomes.
